Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday underlined India’s commitment to strengthening ties with China based on “mutual trust, respect and sensitivity” during his bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin.

Appreciating progress in relations, PM Modi highlighted the creation of “peace and stability” on the border following disengagements and confirmed that an agreement on border management had been reached. He also welcomed the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and direct flight connectivity between the two countries.

“The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to our cooperation. This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity,” Modi said, thanking Xi for the warm welcome and congratulating China on its successful chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

This marks Modi’s first visit to China in over seven years and the first since the Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. In recent months, India and China have taken steps to ease tensions, including reopening trade routes and restarting talks on an updated Air Services Agreement.

The SCO Summit, beginning Sunday evening at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Centre, will also see Modi meet Russian President Vladimir Putin amid rising global trade challenges, including new U.S. tariffs affecting India.
